Following a wayward youth spent treading the boards in the courtroom (University of Auckland Law School) and on the stage (The Actors Program), Alex wrote his first play around 2019 to rapturous response - "I quit my job because of your play."

Since then, Alex's plays have twice been shortlisted for Playmarket’s Adam NZ Best New Play Award and named a Finalist in ScreenCraft’s International Stage Play Contest. Writing for screen, Alex has twice been awarded $10,000 development grants from the New Zealand Writers Guild’s competitive Seed Grant initiative, with script mentorship from Jackie van Beek (What We Do In The Shadows, Time Bandits) and Jesse Griffin (Educators).

Alex's work has been described as "scabrous" and "biting". He writes stories about hyper-intelligent, emotionally bankrupt people trying – and often failing – to be better. His work has been performed at the Basement Theatre in Auckland and selected for development in New York as part of Naked Angels’ long-running Tuesdays@9 reading series.

Alongside his writing, Alex recently co-produced an Auckland Council-funded series of readings for new New Zealand writing at Auckland Central Library under the production banner ‘Call Your Friends’, connecting the work of emerging writers with the people of Tāmaki Makaurau.

Alex is currently developing several projects for stage and screen, including "The Ants" (Shortlisted, Best New Play 2024 - Playmarket NZ), a grief comedy inspired by a chance encounter in a 7-Eleven while living in Bali.

Alex has also recently been selected for Playmarket's Te Hono: Connection mentorship program, working on a new theatre work alongside dramaturge Allison Horsley (Yale School of Drama).
